Every visa route,
explained without the sales pitch.

Who actually qualifies, what you need to arrange, how the process really runs — and the unglamorous reasons files get refused. Read it before you pay anyone, including us.

Rules and thresholds change. Everything below is the general shape of each route, not the current legal text. Confirm the specifics on the official link given for each country.

Pick your route

Six routes cover almost every case. Choose the one closest to what you want, and read the whole tab — the refusal section at the bottom is the part most people skip and later regret.

Study visa

For a full-time course at a recognised institution abroad. In most countries it also carries a post-study work right, which is why it is the most common first step for Indian applicants.

Who generally qualifies

  • An admission or offer letter from a recognised institution
  • An approved English test score, where the course requires one
  • Funds you can genuinely show for tuition plus living costs, held long enough to look real
  • Academic record consistent with the course you picked
  • A believable reason to return, or a lawful stay-back route

What the officer is really testing

Two things only: can you pay for this without working illegally, and are you a genuine student rather than someone using a course as a migration shortcut. Every document you file is evidence for one of those two questions.

Documents to arrange

  • Passport with adequate validity, all used pages
  • 10th, 12th and degree marksheets and certificates
  • English test score report within validity
  • Offer letter and tuition fee payment receipt
  • Statement of purpose
  • Six months of bank statements, bank stamped
  • Loan sanction letter, if funding is a loan
  • Sponsor affidavit plus sponsor income proof and ITRs
  • Property valuation or CA net-worth certificate
  • Medical from a panel clinic, where required
  • Written explanation for any study gap

How it runs

  1. Shortlist — course and country against your marks, budget and intake
  2. Apply — institution applications, then offer letter
  3. Pay and confirm — tuition deposit, and country-specific proof such as a GIC account or blocked account
  4. Build the file — SOP, financials, sponsor papers
  5. File the visa — online form, fee, biometrics, medical
  6. Decision — approval, refusal, or a request for more documents

Why study files actually get refused

  • Funds that appeared suddenly. A large deposit two weeks before filing reads as borrowed money. Season your funds for months, not days.
  • A course that does not follow your history. A commerce graduate applying for nursing needs an explanation, not silence.
  • A generic SOP. Copied templates are recognised instantly. It has to be your own reasons, your own numbers.
  • Sponsor with no documented income. An affidavit alone proves nothing without ITRs and bank flow behind it.
  • An undisclosed earlier refusal. This is the one that turns a weak case into a ban.

Canada

Routes: Study permit with a post-graduation work permit pathway, Express Entry for federal skilled routes, Provincial Nominee streams, spouse open work permit, visitor visa and the parent super visa.

Distinctive: a points system that changes with each draw, and provincial streams that can invite at scores well below the federal cut-off. Proof-of-funds and credential assessment rules are strict.

Australia

Routes: Subclass 500 student visa, 485 temporary graduate stream, 189 skilled independent, 190 state nominated, 491 regional, and employer-sponsored routes.

Distinctive: the Genuine Student requirement makes your stated intent part of the assessment, and skills assessment by the relevant authority is usually mandatory before the points claim.

Official: Department of Home Affairs

United Kingdom

Routes: Student visa on a CAS from a licensed sponsor, the Graduate route for stay-back, Skilled Worker with a sponsoring employer, standard visitor and business visitor.

Distinctive: everything runs on sponsor licences and the CAS. Dependant rules for students have tightened, and salary thresholds on the work route move — check the current figure before planning.

Official: GOV.UK visas and immigration

Germany

Routes: Public university admission, blocked account funding, the Opportunity Card for job seekers, EU Blue Card for skilled employment, and Ausbildung vocational training.

Distinctive: tuition at public universities is minimal, so the cost barrier is the blocked account rather than fees. Document attestation and translation requirements are heavier than most countries.

Official: Make it in Germany

New Zealand

Routes: Student visa, Accredited Employer Work Visa, and the Skilled Migrant residence pathway.

Distinctive: the work route runs entirely through employer accreditation, so employer verification is the first real step, not the last.

Official: Immigration New Zealand

United States

Routes: F-1 student visa on an I-20 with SEVIS payment, B1/B2 visitor and business, and employment categories that run through employers.

Distinctive: the interview decides it. Documents support your answers but do not replace them, and appointment availability often drives the timeline more than processing does.

Official: US Department of State — Visas

Ireland

Routes: Student visa for third-level programmes, Stamp 1G stay-back after graduation, and the Critical Skills Employment Permit.

Distinctive: the critical skills occupation list drives the work route, so eligibility depends on whether your role is on it.

Official: Irish Immigration Service

UAE & Gulf

Routes: Employment visa through a sponsoring employer, Golden Visa for qualifying categories, freezone company setup with an investor visa, visit and transit visas.

Distinctive: fastest turnaround of any destination here, but status is tied to the employer or the entity. Attestation of educational documents is a mandatory step people routinely underestimate.

Six mistakes that cost people the most

These are route-independent. We see them every week, and every one of them is avoidable before you file.

Paying before the assessment

Money goes to an agent, then the profile turns out not to fit the route sold. Get the honest read first — it should cost nothing.

Arranged bank balances

A borrowed balance parked for two weeks is visible in the statement pattern. It is the leading cause of financial refusals, and it can be treated as misrepresentation.

Hiding an earlier refusal

Refusals are visible across systems and often shared between countries. Disclosing one is survivable. Hiding it is what triggers multi-year bans.

Signing an offer nobody verified

Employers must be licensed to sponsor in most countries. Verify the licence before you resign from your current job.

Handing over original documents

No consultant needs to keep your originals. Scans are enough. Where an embassy needs a physical original, insist on a receipt.

Believing a guarantee

No consultant, anywhere, can guarantee a visa. A guarantee usually means someone is planning to file something false in your name.

The words everyone uses and nobody explains

If a consultant uses one of these and cannot explain it in one sentence, that is worth noticing.

SOPStatement of Purpose. Your written explanation of why this course, this country, and what you do after. Written by you, not downloaded.
CASConfirmation of Acceptance for Studies. The UK reference number a licensed university issues before you can file the student visa.
I-20 & SEVISThe US admission document and the student tracking fee you pay before the visa interview.
GICGuaranteed Investment Certificate. A Canadian account holding your first year of living costs, released to you monthly after arrival.
Blocked accountThe German equivalent. Funds locked in an account, released in fixed monthly amounts once you land.
ECAEducational Credential Assessment. An independent body confirms your Indian degree equals the destination's standard. Needed for most PR routes.
CRSComprehensive Ranking System. Canada's points score in the Express Entry pool. Draw cut-offs move constantly.
PGWPPost-Graduation Work Permit. Canada's stay-back after a qualifying programme, usually the bridge from study to PR.
LMIALabour Market Impact Assessment. A Canadian employer's proof that hiring you does not displace a local worker.
PNPProvincial Nominee Program. A Canadian province nominates you, which can invite at a much lower score than the federal draw.
Skills assessmentAn Australian authority verifies your qualification and experience against the occupation you are claiming, before you claim points.
Stamp 1GIreland's post-study permission to remain and look for work.
BiometricsFingerprints and photograph, given at a visa application centre. A separate appointment from filing.
VFSA private company several countries use to collect applications and biometrics. It processes paperwork; it does not decide anything.
AttestationOfficial stamping of your documents to make them valid abroad. Mandatory for the Gulf and heavy for Germany.
MisrepresentationGiving false information or hiding a material fact. Typically a multi-year ban from that country, and it follows you elsewhere.
Ties to home countryJob, business, property, dependants — the evidence that you have reasons to come back. The core of every visitor visa.
Seasoned fundsMoney that has sat in the account long enough to be believable. Recent deposits are the most common financial red flag.
